Claude Giroux swept the rug out from under Alex Ovechkin, for at least one night.
On Saturday night Claude Giroux notched two more marks in Flyers all time scoring sign posts. While Ovie pushed and failed in a chance for his 700th goal, Giroux scored his 250th goal, and earned his 800th career point in his career and as a Flyer.
The Flyers captain contributed two assists and a goal to the 7-2 beating of the Washington Capitals. Perhaps even more importantly he ended a recent points. Also, if again only for one night, seemed to help the Flyers solve their power play woes.
He had primary assists on goals from both Sean Couturier and Travis Konecny. His 250th goal, and 800th point came on a blast during a 5 on 3 man advantage. Left all alone in front, Giroux was not going to miss his opportunity.
With this marker, Giroux becomes just the 10th Flyer to score 250 goals, joining Bill Barber, Brian Propp, Tim Kerr, Bobby Clarke, John LeClair, Rick MacLiesh, Reggie Leach, Eric Lindros, and Simon Gagne. The 800 point club is even more exclusive, as other than Giroux, only Clarke, Barber and Propp have more.
Despite a season off of his most recent averages, with Giroux reaching new heights in franchise scoring it becomes even more apparent that his place as an all time Flyers player is all but set in stone.
